LC Paper inaugurates the largest self-consumption photovoltaic plant in the province of Girona in Beuda
Paper manufacturer LC Paper, in collaboration with Volta Solar/Tadiran, has launched a 4.3 MWp solar installation at its Besalú/Beuda facilities that will generate 100 GWh of renewable energy, cementing its leadership in industrial decarbonization as the world's first B Corp-certified paper mill.
This new infrastructure stands as the most significant industrial self-consumption photovoltaic park in Girona and one of the largest in Catalonia, enabling the company to reduce its dependence on the electrical grid and mitigate market price volatility. The project, which successfully navigated a complex ten-year administrative process, is a cornerstone of LC Paper's strategy to achieve fully decarbonized production, complementing existing technologies such as local biomass and biomethane.
The technical execution was carried out by the Catalan engineering firm SUD Renovables, under an energy sales model led by Volta Solar/Tadiran. This approach ensures a stable and predictable electricity supply, a critical factor for an energy-intensive company that exported 51% of its sales in 2024 and competes in global markets where energy conditions are often more favorable.
With a consolidated turnover of 55 million euros in 2024 and an annual production of 50,000 tonnes of paper, LC Paper reinforces its commitment to comprehensive sustainability. Following this milestone, the company and its partners are already exploring new «behind the meter» energy storage solutions to enhance supply stability and continue breaking taboos regarding the feasibility of renewables within the local industrial sector.
